Fundamentals of Data Protection

In this interactive one-week programme, participants will learn the fundamentals and develop a comprehensive overview of data protection law and regulations. The learning process is enhanced by looking at current issues and working on case studies as part of daily lectures and practical workshops. Expertise and self-confidence are increased when it comes to assessing data protection issues from different perspectives and discussing relevant challenges with experts. This module will provide information about data protection in a global context: an introduction to the new Swiss data protection law and the European data protection law, the legislative framework and its implementation in Switzerland, key definitions within the new Swiss DPA and how they are interpreted and applied, as well as the data protection principles which govern legal regulation and practice.

This module is ideal in particular for those who are interested in building a quick and solid foundation in the area of data protection and privacy law.

The module also covers:

  • Ability to represent the organisation’s official position in data protection law and in legislative procedure
  • Knowledege regarding the assessment of the the application of various laws
  • Skills regarding the monitoring and assessment of the potential effects of non-compliance with laws, regulations and/or guidelines
  • Knowledge of key data protection definitions, data protection principles and the lawfulness of personal data processing
  • Knowledge of the data subjects’ rights created by the new Swiss DPA
  • Knowledge of the obligations imposed on Swiss organisations with regard to personal data processing
  • Application of new Swiss DPA to employment law
  • Cooperation with the FDPIC
  • Scope of the EU data protection law, extraterritoriality principle
